There are many truths of different sorts learned in life. For me, one of the most personally profound of those is this:

It only takes one person to change your life in ways that you could never have dreamed or anticipated. There are those serendipitous encounters between people with no logical trail or purpose to account for them that permanently alter the frail plans that ego concocts.

I have never lived my life in a straight line. By that I mean, I have never known the answer to the question asked of me in many interviews, "Where do you plan to be in 10 years?' I have always envied the certainty, on some level, of those people that had the answer to that question but truth be told I'm not sure I would want to know that answer. Which leads me to one of those very encounters that has me writing this article for WeLoveCostaRica.com

On a December night a couple of years ago I was doing something completely forgettable when the phone rang. On the other end was a 'friend' whom I had not spoken to in quite a while. She had gotten my number from a mutual friend and we caught up and reminisced a bit. Then inevitably we began detailing to each other the current challenges we were individually facing.

For her it was anticipating some very expensive dental procedures which were going to cost something like the price of a new car, at least an intermediate on the Hertz scale. Her current dental insurance was essentially worthless in terms of what impact it could make on the cost, which was in the five figure range beginning with the number '2'.

She needed a combination of bridges and implants to restore what had once been a perfect smile resulting from head-on with a tree. She had recovered physically but her teeth were a mess. It was very easy to relate to her because I too had faced the same dilemma on a smaller scale, but not by much.

At a cool thousand per tooth for a bridge or triple and sometimes quadruple that for a 'quality implant' and with 3 girls under 6 at the time, Dad can and has to wait. Anyway we finished our conversation, 'Happy New Yeared' each other and that was that.

Then I started to think a bit about her situation...

In the '80's I had worked and lived in Mexico and Peru. I had always kept up with what was going on down there, especially the increasingly numerous articles on health care, particularly dental, that was amazingly inexpensive at a quality level claiming to be something comparable to the US.

I then started doing 'searches' for dentists in Central and South America and was very impressed with not only the quality of the websites but the educational resumes, skill set for the dental work and if you can believe what you read, glowing tributes to the doctors and testimonials, from Americans in particular, practically gushing about how affordable it was.

I sat back and thought well it sure reads good but the 'average' citizen is not about to load up and fly to a third or even second world country where they do not know the language, trust themselves to a foreign doctor (been to a US emergency room lately?) and sure as hell wouldn't drink the water no matter if there was a McDonalds there.

Even if going there would save them 15 or 20 THOUSAND DOLLARS for the SAME dental work fear of the unknown, as a well-known credit vendor advertises, is 'priceless.'

So then, since I posed the problem to myself, what is the answer?

I begin brainstorming the problem wondering if someone was there to educate them about the dentist in the other country, especially in regards to their education and training, help them plan their trip from beginning to end, give them a comfort level about making the trip, in spite of their fears and at the same time helping them see the cost benefit and realize thousands of dollars in savings....would that make a difference? The answer was 'why not, of course it would.'

I had known Costa Rica was establishing itself in health care alternatives, particularly in dental and cosmetic procedures. I decided to go to Costa Rica, educate myself about the country and identify a dentist or dental group to share my business plan with. It was as I was planning my trip I discovered WeLoveCostaRica.com website. What an absolute treasure trove of information! I saw that Scott had spent years building credibility for his website by vetting individuals and businesses in all the major economic and health industries.

It was while reading WeLoveCostaRica.com I read an article about David, a California native, who had moved to Costa Rica, found his beautiful wife Gabriela and started his business as a website builder with a company called Ticode. I contacted David and before i even got to Costa Rica had him begin building my website. It is here again that the point I made about serendipitous events came into play.

David had built the website for one of the best dentists in Costa Rica, Dr Mario, who also was by coincidence Scott's dentist, and told him about my business plan and the website he was building for me. Dr Mario told David to let me know he was interested in my idea. Dr. Mario is a graduate of the University of Miami Dental School and did his internship at a Miamai Hospital. Along with his wife Priscilla, who is also a dentist, they have built a thriving practice in Escazu, the 'Manhattan' of San Jose.

Dr. Mario - My dentist and Scott's family dentist in Costa Rica.

Well, to make a long story short, Dr Mario and I met and we have formed a partnership. All of the ideas in my business plan, including free round trip airfare for qualified patients, is now a reality. And what do we have to show for this partnership? How about a contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield SC to provide their 2 million dental policy holders with Dr Mario chosen as a Blue Cross 'Preferred Provider' in his English friendly, state-of-the-art facility in Escazu.

One person... that's all, just one!
